6 Steps To Successfully Pack a Moving Box

For most Americans, cardboard boxes form the backbone of their move to a new home. Filling that box certainly seems simple enough. After all, it's just an empty container waiting to be filled! But in reality, how you pack that box will go a long way toward the success of your move or unexpected problems. Here are a few key steps to pack each box properly.

1. Get Good Boxes

Where will you get your cardboard boxes? There are generally two methods: collecting old or used boxes or buying cardboard boxes made for the purpose of moving and transporting items. New boxes are the best choice for their sturdiness and uniformity. Consult with a moving professional about the mix of boxes to buy.

If using free boxes from others, look for gently used boxes. Avoid boxes that have been filled with food, liquid, or beverages. These can attract pests and may already be compromised. Try to get a lot of the same types of boxes, focusing on size and shape.

2. Reinforce the Bottom

Turn over your box and check the bottom. Is it sturdy? Many people start by putting an extra layer of packing tape along the bottom seam to prevent it from collapsing. After doing this, place the box on a level surface and line the bottom with a bit of padding—such as a towel, some bubble wrap, or newspaper. This lining helps distribute weight and adds a layer of protection against moisture.

3. Assess Your Stuff

Don't immediately start filling the box. Instead, take a moment to assess what you plan to put in it. In particular, you should analyze the weight of various items, their fragility, and their bulkiness or flexibility. Packing a box, like packing any larger storage space, is a strategic task. Reserve the heaviest and least flexible items for the bottom of the box, leaving lighter and softer materials for the top. 4. Avoid Air Pockets

If you leave air pockets, the contents of the box will shift and could be damaged. And when it comes to the top and the side space of the box, empty space could lead to collapse during stacking.

5. Don't Overload It

While the goal is to fill up each box completely, don't overload them. When packing heavy items like books, tools, kitchenware, and pantry goods, stop and lift the box occasionally. You may be surprised at how quickly it becomes too heavy. Switch to lighter items and filler material before the box gets to the point where it can no longer be lifted easily.

Don't try to squeeze in more than the space in each box allows. The sides and top should never bulge—as this can then result in it bursting open and risks damaging items. If you can't close the lid flaps easily, take out something and save it for the next box. Then, pick up the box and shake it a little, testing for signs of shifting inside.

6. Seal and Label the Box

Finally, you're ready to seal and label the box. Don't skimp on packing tape. Run a solid line of tape across the seam and at least one line of tape perpendicular to it across the entire length of the top. Finish by clearly identifying the room, owner, and/or major contents. Some people use colored labels or numbers to differentiate between categories. Your moving company may also have a preferred inventory method.

While planning how you will move large home items, don't forget to plan how you will pack your family's clothing. You can just gather all clothing up, fold it, and place it in boxes. But by doing so, you risk damaging clothing and setting yourself up for hours of ironing once you reach your new home.

1. Hang Your Most Prized Clothing Items in Wardrobe Boxes

If you frequently travel and transport clothing in garment bags, then you may wish you could invest in a dozen of them to help you keep your prized clothing items wrinkle- and damage-free during the move. Thankfully, you don't have to spend a fortune on reusable garment bags when you purchase just a few affordable wardrobe boxes.

Wardrobe boxes are tall cardboard boxes with a metal bar at the top. Not only do they protect your favorite clothing from wrinkles during the moving process, but they also make packing these items faster. All you have to do is transfer items hanging in your closet right onto the bar in the box.

However, plastic hangers can take up a lot of space on the metal bar, which limits the number of garments you can hang on it. For this reason, it is best to replace plastic hangers with metal ones before hanging items on the bar.

You should also cover each clothing item you hang in plastic to protect each item, such as with a dry cleaning bag. This protection will further limit wrinkling due to friction that can occur when garments rub against each other in the wardrobe box. 3. Pack Dark- and Light-Colored Clothing in Separate Boxes

You likely know that dark clothing dyes can transfer onto light-colored clothing in the washing machine. However, you may not realize that dark dye can also transfer from one clothing item to another outside of a washing machine. This can occur when the clothing is subjected to even a bit of moisture, such as humidity in the air.

This makes it important to pack dark- and light-colored clothing items in separate boxes whenever possible, especially if the dark clothing has not yet been washed, and you’re moving on a hot, humid day.

4. Only Pack Clothing in Clothing Boxes

It is important to completely fill all moving boxes, including those containing clothing to keep items from moving around in the boxes during transport. However, if you have a box of clothing that is not filled completely to the top, don't be tempted to add non-clothing items into the box other than sheets, towels, and other fabric items.

When you're preparing for a big move, you put a lot of attention toward packing delicate items like china, glassware, and priceless artwork. Many people can overlook special packing for items they don't consider to be as fragile. You walk on your rugs every day, but they also need special preparation before and during the moving process.

If you have to put rugs in temporary storage, you also need to take special precautions. Since one rug can represent a huge economic investment, and because some rugs are old with a rich history, you don't want anything to happen to them. Here's what you need to know about moving and storing rugs.

Cleaning

Rugs collect dirt and dust as they sit on your floor day in and day out. Even if you are fastidious about vacuuming and cleanliness, you'll want to have each rug professionally cleaned before the move. This keeps you from moving dirt to your new home, but it also helps to protect the rug.

When dirt gets ground down into the rug, it can weaken the fibers. Food, dust, and plant matter in rugs can also attract pests. For rugs made from natural fibers, pests can be a death sentence. A clean rug will fare much better in storage and in transit.

Rolling

Many people make the mistake of always rolling their rugs with the top side in. However, before rolling, you should find out if your rugs should be rolled in or out.

Some rugs with worn backing might not stand the stress of rolling with the pile inside because it stretches the backing. For delicate rugs, this stress can actually crack the backing or cause the rug to lose its shape. Also, when rolled this way, the rug might have difficulty lying flat again, as the curve of the backing can train the rug to curl up at the corners.

However, rugs in good condition can be rolled with the pile inward to help protect the pile from damage; usually, the foundation of the rug is stronger than the pile and can handle the stress.

Never fold or crease rugs, especially if they are finely woven or made from wool or other natural animal fibers, like goat hair. Linen and silk rugs should also never be folded. The deep creases in a fold can permanently alter the structure of the fibers, and your rug will never be the same again.

Securing

After the rug is rolled, you'll need to secure the rug so that it stays tightly furled. Most people think of using tape or shrink wrap, but neither is appropriate for a rug. With the pile facing out, tape can pull out fibers. Also, tape can leave behind a tacky residue on the rug itself, which is very difficult to remove. Shrink wrap can crush high-pile rugs.

Instead, use natural twine or even ribbons to tie up the rug. String is easy to secure and will cause no lasting damage to the carpet.

Protecting

Next, you need to make sure that your rug stays protected during transport and during any short-term storage. You want to keep your rug free of dust and debris, but the biggest thing you need to protect against is moisture, especially in a storage unit.

Never wrap rugs in plastic to protect them. Plastic traps moisture inside the rug and, in humid areas, makes the perfect breeding ground for mildew and mold. Many rugs stored in plastic cannot be restored because of mold and mildew damage.

Instead, use heavier paper to protect your rolled-up rug. If your rug is extremely delicate, you may even roll it up with light-weight tissue to prevent the layers from rubbing against each other as it is being moved, and you can get custom cardboard tubes for increased protection. You can secure the outer paper with tape or more twine.

Transporting

You should arrange for your rugs to lie flat during transport with nothing piled on top of them. A carpet that is arranged to stand on one end crushes one side of the pile with the weight of the rest. Items on top of the rug can stress the backing and flatten the pile, causing creases in the rug when you unroll it.

Don't load long rugs over other items, such as furniture or box piles, leaving on end of the rug hanging without any support. You don't want the rug to fold or curve in the middle — it should be supported evenly.

Storing

Finally, if you aren't moving directly to your new home, or if you want to wait for enough floor space to roll out your rugs again, make sure they are properly stored. Rugs should be supported in storage, but don't lay them directly on the floor. Lay down a layer of paper if you don't have a long enough shelf to hold your rug.

Always get a temperature and moisture-controlled storage unit if you have delicate or antique rugs. Indoor facilities make pests less of a problem. Also, don't stack rugs on top of each other in storage — long-term crushing of a rolled rug can cause permanent damage. Make sure rugs are always stored out of direct sunlight to prevent uneven fading.

How to Keep Your Artwork Safe During a Move

Whether you need to move a large collection of artwork or just a few prized pieces, you may fear that they will become damaged during the moving process. It would be disheartening to open a moving box that contains damaged artwork, especially if you own any one-of-a-kind paintings that are irreplaceable.

Luckily, when you take the right steps to package your artwork properly, you can look forward to it staying in great shape during the moving process. Read on to learn the steps to packing your artwork before moving to protect it from damage and how to prevent damage in the moving truck.

1. Protect Glass From Breakage

If you have artwork covered with glass, then of course, you need to take steps to keep the glass from breaking during transport. The first step is to cover the glass with painters tape. Painters tape will help protect the glass from breakage and, if the glass does break, it will hold the broken pieces of glass together so their sharp edges do not pierce your painting.

Do not use masking tape to perform this step. Painters tape has less adhesive on it that is less likely to remain on the glass after you remove the tape.

2. Cover Each Painting With a Layer of Glassine

Glassine is a special type of craft paper that can protect your paintings from grease, water, and even oil. Covering your paintings with a thick layer of glassine will protect them from many types of damage during shipping. If you prefer, you can cover your paintings with acid-free tissue paper instead, although it will not protect your paintings as well as glassine will.

3. Cover Each Painting with Palette Wrap

Next, wrap each painting very snugly with palette wrap, which is plastic wrap that is wound in a large roll and equipped with handles to make wrapping items easier. Palette wrap will protect your paintings from scratches and moisture damage. Wrap several layers of this plastic wrap around each painting to provide superior protection.

4. Place Artwork Between Two Layers of Cardboard

While your artwork will later be boxed, placing one layer of cardboard on each side of your paintings will further protect them from damage that could occur during the moving process. Cut cardboard pieces just a bit wider and taller than your paintings and tape them together with painters tape after placing them on your paintings.

5. Cover Paintings in Bubble Wrap

Once your paintings are covered in cardboard, the next step is to wrap them in bubble wrap. This will not only protect them against punctures and other types of damage that could occur if something heavy in the moving truck bumps into their boxes but also against fluctuations in temperature since the air in bubble wrap acts as insulation.

6. Pack Your Paintings in the Right Boxes

You don't want to choose just any old box to place your artwork in when packing it. You should pack artwork in mirror boxes, also called picture boxes. Unlike typical boxes, each mirror box set comes with four separate sections of cardboard. Each section is slid over one corner of your painting, protecting the corners of your painting from damage.

These boxes are also designed to hug your artwork securely, minimizing shifting during the moving process that could damage the pieces.

7. Pad Box Interiors

While your mirror boxes should fit snugly over your paintings, make sure you fill up any extra space with tissue paper or bubble wrap. The extra padding will keep paintings from shifting in their boxes during the moving process.

8. Seal Boxes with Strong Packing Tape

No matter how well you prepare your paintings for placement in their boxes, your paintings could become damaged if the packing tape you use breaks during transit and allows your painting and packing materials to spill out. Choose high-quality packing tape to secure your boxes with.

Moving a home office can be tricky. You need to ensure that your equipment, documents, and furniture are moved safely, and you probably want to minimize the effect that the move has on your productivity. Take a look at some tips that can help you move your home office as efficiently as possible.

Declutter Your Documents

A move is a good time to sort through your paper documents and figure out what you can keep and what you can get rid of. Take the opportunity to scan and digitize files so that you can lighten your load by moving with less paperwork. It's much easier to move a hard drive than it is to move a file cabinet full of documents.

You may want to pack the power cords and any other cords or cables in the same box as the piece of equipment they go with. If you decide to pack them separately, label each cord so that you know which piece of equipment it belongs to.

For a piece of equipment that has several different plugs and cords, like a desktop computer, use your smartphone to take a picture of the plug placement before you start unplugging the device. That way, you can refer to it when you set the equipment back up in your new home.
