Packed and Ready To Roll: Tips To Pack Better for Your Next Move

Jul 17, 2023

Ready for your big move? One of the most stressful parts of moving preparation is making sure that all your household items are packed and ready to go for moving day. While the movers might be doing the heavy lifting, you'll still want to ensure your items are packed as efficiently as possible. This makes a huge difference in how easy it is to unpack once you're settled into your new home. Read on for a few suggestions on how to best pack your belongings for your upcoming move.

Use Proper Packing Materials

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make in the rush of a move is not using the proper packing materials for their belongings. Remember that even if the move is a short distance away, it's still better to be safe than sorry when keeping your valuables secure and in one piece. Here are just a few examples of items that will need to be packed with specialized packing materials.

Dishware

Dishes, cups, bowls and other dishware are often made using fragile materials such as glass or ceramic. During a move, you'll want to ensure these items are kept securely in place without the risk of bumping into each other, cracking or breaking completely. Sleeves dedicated to each category of dishware is therefore an excellent material to purchase ahead of time as each item has its own unique sleeve to fit into for the ultimate level of protection.

Fragile Items

If you have other items in your home that are especially fragile, you'll want to take extra care packing these. Dedicate them to their own box with plenty of padding and packing material that will provide a soft cushion for more shock absorption. Bubble wrap, plastic sheets, and molded foam are all excellent choices to guarantee your fragile items are protected from breakage. As with any fragile item, be sure to clearly label the box and communicate with your movers that there is a fragile item stored inside.

Consider Weight Distribution

Packing your belongings efficiently starts with great planning ahead of time. Consider what pieces are the heaviest and start delegating them to the appropriate size box. This will help minimize damage during moving and also make the process run a lot smoother. Here are just a few examples of what can be packed with weight distribution in mind.

Books, DVDs and Other Media

If you have media items such as books, DVDs, CDs, or vinyl records, be aware that these items can be quite heavy. Even in their small size, these media items can easily add considerable weight to your boxes.

A great way to store these items is to opt for smaller boxes or pair them with lighter materials. A smaller box, for example, can be used to store books exclusively, making for a much easier item to move and unpack. If you add media items to a larger box, fill the remaining space with lightweight items such as bedding to help offset the heaviness.

Appliances

Another heavy item that can befuddle homeowners are your appliances. Toasters, coffee makers, and microwaves are just a few examples of portable appliances that will need specialized packing. Remember that these items are often quite heavy, so having their own dedicated box is a great choice to help make moving them easier. Keeping these items stored in their own box will also help protect them from bumping into other items, minimizing the risk of damage to your appliances.
